Background

Griffith University expanded its dental teaching clinic on the Gold Coast to upgrade clinical facilities and increase access to dental care within the community.

The clinic operates as a combined treatment and training environment, delivering supervised clinical services alongside hands-on learning for dental students.

The redevelopment aimed to increase the clinic’s patient capacity by approximately 20%, supporting treatment of over 7,000 patients annually.

Objectives

The water treatment system was required to deliver treated water suitable for dental instrument reprocessing and maintain compliance with AS 5369:2023 under sustained sterilisation demand.

Challenges

A university teaching clinic operates very differently from a standard dental practice. The system had to overcome:

  • Unpredictable peaks: Water demand spikes sharply when large classes run sterilisation cycles all at once.
  • Vulnerable machinery: Untreated local tap water contains minerals that quickly scale and clog precision dental instruments.
  • Zero downtime: The clinic cannot train students if the sterilisers are offline due to water quality issues.

Solution

We delivered the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the water treatment system for the expanded dental clinic.

The treatment plant incorporates a staged process consisting of:

  • MediaPRO multimedia filtration to remove sediment and suspended particles
  • Herco reverse osmosis (RO) to reduce dissolved minerals and total dissolved solids
  • UV disinfection to provide final microbial control

These treatment stages condition the feedwater to a quality suitable for sterilisation processes and minimise scaling and fouling risks within downstream equipment.

Outcome

We delivered a reliable, high-purity water system that effortlessly absorbs the clinic’s heavy student traffic. Griffith University now has a compliant facility where training can run without interruption, backed by equipment that is shielded from costly mineral damage.

In Summary

Southland Filtration engineered and installed a compliant, multi-stage water treatment solution for Griffith University’s dental expansion. The result is a high-performance facility that protects expensive sterilisation assets and supports continuous clinical training.
