Background
The Westmead Hospital Redevelopment is one of the largest public health infrastructure projects in New South Wales, delivering an innovative, integrated facility poised to provide world-class healthcare for decades to come.
Objectives
The primary objective of this project was to ensure that the new facility complies with the AS/NZS 4187:2014 (now AS/NZS 5369:2023) standards for water quality in CSSD (Central Sterile Services Department) and Endoscopy departments. This required the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of state-of-the-art RO (Reverse Osmosis) water systems.
Challenges
Key challenges included integrating the RO water systems into the extensive new infrastructure of the hospital while ensuring compliance with rigorous standards. The systems needed to be designed for both ambient and elevated temperature water delivery, with robust mechanisms to prevent biofilm growth and ensure microbial compliance over the long term.
Solution
In collaboration with Multiplex and Getinge, provided a turnkey solution featuring:
- Two purified water systems for CSSD
- One purified water system for Endoscopy
- Three orbitally welded food grade SS316 RO ringmains
- Seismic restraints for all equipment and ringmains, in accordance with AS1170.4
The RO system for Endoscopy supplies compliant water at ambient temperature through a dedicated ringmain, while the RO systems for CSSD deliver water at elevated temperatures. All systems are equipped with fully automatic in-built thermal disinfection programs to minimize biofilm growth and maintain microbial compliance throughout the life of the plant.
Outcome
The project successfully delivered healthcare compliant water filtration, ensuring the efficient operation of the CSSD and Endoscopy departments. The advanced RO systems installed by our team have significantly enhanced the hospital’s capacity to provide safe and effective healthcare services.
In Summary
Our collaboration with Multiplex and Getinge on the Westmead Hospital Redevelopment has resulted in a seamless path to compliance with AS/NZS 4187:2014 standards (now AS/NZS 5369:2023). The turnkey solution provided not only meets but exceeds the requirements for water quality in critical hospital departments, ensuring long-term operational efficiency and safety.
