Containerised Systems Lifted Into Position, Marking Major Project Milestone
[22/10/25] Southland Filtration has reached another major milestone in the delivery of Tasmania's first Class A Recycled Water Treatment Plant, with the containerised treatment systems and storage tanks now successfully lifted into place at the Blackmans Bay site.
The installation represents a significant step toward commissioning the facility, which will convert Class B discharge into high-quality Class A recycled water for reuse through the South Arm Pipeline network.
The Blackmans Bay Recycled Water Treatment Plant is an initiative designed to upcycle treated effluent from the existing Blackmans Bay Sewage Treatment Plant. Once operational, the system will supply Class A recycled water through the 14 km South Arm Pipeline, providing a sustainable water source for irrigation and community use while reducing discharge to the marine environment.
Designed and manufactured by Southland Filtration, the containerised plant is modular in design, incorporating a 450 kl Class B storage tank and treatment units that feature two stages of filtration — multimedia filtration with automatic backwashing, followed by ultrafiltration for final polishing. A 110 kl Class A storage tank and a pressure-controlled booster pump station package will deliver the treated water through a submarine pipe beneath the Derwent River, with monitoring systems in place to detect any anomalies in flow.
"The lifting of these containerised systems went smoothly and safely," said Paul Hochman, Southland Project Manager. "Seeing the plant structures in place on site is a tangible reminder of the progress we've made and the expertise that has gone into every stage of design, fabrication and delivery. It's exciting to see the project taking physical shape."
The modular plant has been developed and tested by Southland Filtration, who previously completed a successful Factory Acceptance Test in late 2023. Site installation will now progress toward commissioning, scheduled for completion in Q1 2026.
