Background
Our partnership with Axis Plumbing involved design, supply, and the commissioning of a water treatment solution for the Sydney Football Stadium (currently known as Allianz Stadium), a world-class multipurpose venue with a capacity of 42,500. This iconic stadium is home to several professional sports teams and has hosted major events, including the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and concerts by renowned artists.

Objectives
The primary objectives of the project were to:

  • Reduce sediment in rainwater runoff.
  • Implement a sustainable rainwater reuse system.
  • Provide a multi-staged filtration and disinfection system capable of handling large flow rates in the specific setting.

Challenges
The project presented several challenges, including:

  • Developing a staged process that effectively utilised various equipment types to achieve acceptable water treatment levels for reuse.
  • Ensuring the system could reliably handle the fluctuating flow rates and water quality variations associated with rainwater harvesting.

Solution
To address these challenges, we implemented a comprehensive solution that incorporated:

  • JUDO auto backwash filters -These filters effectively removed suspended solids from the rainwater.
  • SKAN stainless steel bag filter housings – These housings provided additional filtration and clarified the water.
  • SKAN UV disinfection systems – These systems ensured the treated rainwater met stringent health and safety standards for reuse.

Outcome
The successful implementation of this solution resulted in a complete and reliable system for rainwater reuse at the Sydney Football Stadium. By capturing and treating rainwater from the stadium’s roof, we were able to:

  • Reduce the stadium’s reliance on potable water.
  • Conserve valuable water resources.
  • Contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly operation.

In Summary
This project demonstrated the effectiveness of rainwater harvesting and treatment technologies in large-scale commercial applications. The solution we provided not only met the specific requirements of the Sydney Football Stadium but also set a benchmark for sustainable water management in the sports and entertainment industry.
