Background

Peninsula Private Hospital is in Kippa-Ring, Queensland, serving the Redcliffe Peninsula community. It operates 24/7 providing surgical, medical and clinical services.

The hospital completed a major redevelopment to strengthen its clinical service capabilities while remaining fully operational. As part of this expansion, a high-purity water treatment system was required to support sterilisation processes within the upgraded facility. A Reverse Osmosis (RO) system was selected to meet CSSD requirements, including compliance with AS 5369:2023.

Objectives

The project aimed to design and install an RO plant to supply high-purity water for CSSD sterilisation, meeting healthcare compliance requirements.

The system needed to:

  • Meet sterilisation water quality specifications
  • Protect critical equipment from scaling and fouling
  • Integrate within a constrained plant room without disrupting hospital operations
  • Support commissioning and laboratory validation
  • Deliver reliable and maintainable performance aligned with healthcare standards

Challenges

The RO plant was installed within an existing plant room with limited space. Some equipment had already been installed before CSSD requirements were finalised, reducing flexibility for the remaining layout.

As additional treatment stages were incorporated, the footprint became increasingly constrained. The limited space made installation more complex, particularly while other trades were still working in the area, and increased the difficulty of equipment positioning, pipe routing and maintaining service access.

Solution

Southland designed and delivered a custom RO plant solution to suit the constrained space and operational requirements. The solution involved:

  • Redesigning the plant room layout to suit the limited footprint
  • Modifying pipework while maintaining service access
  • Installing a multi-stage treatment system incorporating compact-footprint JUDO JPF AT/P DN65 screen filters and Autofine filtration units
  • Supplying a custom-designed stainless-steel skid to support and integrate the JUDO and Autofine units within the plant room layout
  • Integrating water softening and carbon filtration for equipment protection
  • Implementing a compact-footprint Endotherm ETD300TPA-D-HF RO system with remote mimic and solenoid control panels
  • Commissioning the system in line with project, regulatory and AS 5369:2023 requirements

Outcome

The RO plant was successfully installed in accordance with the revised design, without compromising quality, functionality or compliance. Works were completed within a fully operational hospital environment.

Laboratory testing confirmed results within specification on the first submission, validating compliance with CSSD requirements and readiness to support sterilisation operations.

In Summary
Southland delivered a compliant, space-efficient RO system for a hospital CSSD expansion, managing plant room constraints and live operational conditions. This project highlights Southland's expertise in delivering technically robust, compliant water treatment solutions for complex healthcare environments
