STATE:
TAS
PARTNERS: Bega Cheese PTY LTD
SCOPE: Supply, Installation, Commissioning

TECHNOLOGY: Screen Filtration
APPLICATION: Potable Cold Water
WATER ISSUES: Sediment
PRODUCTS / SOLUTION: Judo

Background
Bega Cheese processing facility in Lenah Valley, Tasmania, faced challenges with maintaining the purity of its potable cold water supply. Ensuring the prevention of foreign sediment particles in the incoming mains water supply is crucial for food processing plants to maintain operational efficiency and product quality.

Objectives
The primary objective of this project was to supply, install, and commission an automatic filtration system for the potable cold water supply at Bega Cheese. The goal was to filter out foreign sediment particles, ensuring high-quality water for all processing activities.

Challenges
The Lenah Valley site experienced an increase in foreign sediment particles such as dirt, rust, and scale in the mains water supply. This contamination led to several issues:

  • Ineffective operation of systems like separators.
  • Increased operating costs due to frequent water filter element replacements.
  • Potential damage to valves, seals, ceramic discs, and pipework through pitting and corrosion.

Solution

We addressed these issues by providing a fully automated filtration system. The solution involved installing a JUDO JPF DN150 series automatic backwash filter, capable of filtering all incoming water to 50 microns. This system effectively screens out sediment particles of 50 microns and larger, flushing them to the drain without interrupting the water flow.

Outcome

The installation of the automatic filtration system brought significant improvements:

  • Immediate enhancement in the operation of internal systems.
  • Reduction in operating costs due to less frequent filter changes and minimized water leakage.
  • Higher quality water supplied on-site, prolonging the lifespan of all equipment in contact with the water supply.

In Summary

The successful completion and commissioning of the automatic filtration system at Bega Cheese in Lenah Valley have ensured a more efficient and cost-effective operation. By addressing the sediment issue, we provided a long-term solution that enhances water quality and protects the facility’s equipment from potential damage.
