PROJECT: Brett Whitely Place
STATE:
NSW
PARTNERS: Aquadec, North Sydney Council
SCOPE: Design, supply, commissioning

TECHNOLOGY: Screen Filtration
APPLICATION: Process Water Treatment
WATER ISSUES: Micro-organisms, algae
PRODUCTS / SOLUTION: Autofine, Water testing

Background

Southland Filtration was approached by project engineers for the upgrade works at Brett Whiteley Water Feature. The project scope included the design, supply, and commissioning of a water recirculation treatment system for the water features.

Objectives

The main objectives of the project were to:

  • Design an efficient water recirculation system.
  • Incorporate pumps to pressurize water through the fountain network based on a timer program.
  • Ensure the removal of suspended solids.
  • Provide residual disinfection for the control of bacteria.

Challenges

The project faced several challenges:

  • Limited space in the existing plant room required a compact system design.
  • The need for a reliable disinfection method without the use of chemicals.
  • Ensuring consistent performance and maintenance of disinfection residuals over time.

Solution

To address these challenges, the following solutions were implemented:

  • A single pressure pump with timer program control was installed to manage water recirculation through the fountains.
  • A 20-micron automatic self-cleaning screen filter was used to remove suspended solids.
  • Copper/silver ionization technology was chosen for its chemical-free disinfection properties, long-lasting residual effects, and effective control of algae and bio-film.

Outcome

The system was successfully programmed and commissioned, involving regular water tests over a two-week period to ensure maintained residual disinfection. This water recirculation system formed a crucial part of a major upgrade to Brett Whiteley Place, which also included high-quality granite paving, drainage improvements, lighting, street furniture, bus shelters, and a complete refurbishment of the existing fountains.

In Summary

Southland Filtration delivered a compact, efficient, and reliable water treatment solution for the Brett Whiteley Water Feature upgrade. The project was finalised on schedule, adhering to  budget, and exceeded expectations, contributing to the enhanced aesthetic and functional value of Brett Whiteley Place.
