Background

Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) Hospital in New South Wales required an upgrade to its Central Sterilising Services Department (CSSD) water system to align with the latest standards. This project was undertaken in collaboration with the Local Health District (LHD) project team.

Objectives

To ensure the Central Sterilising Services Department (CSSD) operated in full compliance with AS/NZS 5369:2023, Reprocessing of reusable medical devices and other devices in health and non-health related facilities   specifically tables 7.2 and 7.4, which define water quality requirements for sterilisation. To achieve this, the project scope involved the supply, installation, and commissioning of a tailored water treatment solution that would deliver consistently high-quality water for critical CSSD operations.

Challenges

Access and space constraints within the hospital’s plantroom posed a key challenge. The installation team had limited room to manoeuvre equipment, particularly for the reverse osmosis system. Coordination with hospital staff was essential to create clear access by temporarily removing pipework and valves.

Solution

Our team delivered a comprehensive water treatment system that included:

  • MediaPro (Sediment filtration, Water softening, Carbon filtration)
  • Ringmain installation

All components were carefully selected and configured to meet the hospital’s compliance requirements and spatial limitations.

Outcome

Despite the physical constraints, the system was successfully installed and commissioned, thanks to the cooperation of the RPA Hospital team and our installation partner, Penrith Lakes Plumbing. The collaboration ensured a seamless delivery of the water treatment solution, with room for future system expansion.

In Summary

Royal Prince Albert Expert knowledge, thoughtful project management, and strong collaboration were key to delivering a water treatment solution that ensures RPA’s CSSD department consistently meets compliance standards.
