Background
Bundaberg Oral Health operates from the Bundaberg Base Hospital campus in regional Queensland. The facility has 13+ dental chairs and a dedicated Central Sterilising Services Department (CSSD), reprocessing reusable medical devices for general and specialist oral health services and the region’s school dental program.
The CSSD required water treatment system capable of meeting AS 5369:2023 requirements for final rinse water and steriliser feedwater.
The facility also needed to account for Bundaberg’s known flood risk, an important operational consideration for fixed water treatment infrastructure in the region.
Objective
- Provide consistent treated water quality across critical CSSD processes
- Address key incoming water contaminants, including bacterial and endotoxin loads, hardness and dissolved solids
- Build flood resilience into the system design, allowing critical equipment to be relocated at short notice
Challenges
The site’s flood exposure meant a conventional fixed installation wasn’t suitable. The treatment equipment needed to be moved out of harm’s way quickly if flooding threatened the site, without compromising system performance or the practical requirements of a working CSSD.
Solution
Southland Filtration combined two treatment stages in a configuration designed around both water quality and site requirements.
MediaPRO multimedia filtration provided pre-treatment ahead of a compact PuROtherm reverse osmosis unit.
The pre-treatment stage was mounted on a skid with caster wheels and simple disconnection points, allowing it to be quickly disconnected and wheeled to a safe location ahead of a flood warning, then reconnected once conditions allowed.
Outcome
Bundaberg Oral Health now has a treatment system designed to support AS 5369:2023 compliance while giving the facility a practical response to flood events.
The mobile pre-treatment skid provides the flexibility to protect critical equipment when required, without adding complexity to normal CSSD operations.
