Background
We were invited to provide a reliable water filtration solution for a new correctional facility in New Zealand. In collaboration with AECOM (hydraulic design engineers) and AE Smith (onsite mechanical contractor), we developed a customised, pre-fabricated filtration system. This system features dual-stage, self-cleaning screen filters designed to effectively remove suspended sediment from the incoming water supply, ensuring optimal protection for the facility’s infrastructure.
Objectives
The primary objectives of this project were:
- Maintain a consistent level of filtration without interruption to service flow.
- Reduce sediment levels in the incoming mains supply to 5 microns.
Challenges
The project presented several challenges, primarily due to the need to manage a large flow rate at a fine micron rating. This required a dual-staged filtration system that could efficiently and effectively remove sediment while maintaining high throughput.
Solution
To overcome these challenges, the dual-stage filtration system we utilising was the AUTOFINE solution This system consists of a 20-micron first stage followed by a 5-micron second stage, both supplied as complete skid-mounted packages. This configuration provided a robust and reliable solution for removing sediment and ensuring consistent water quality.
Outcome
The successful implementation of the AUTOFINE systems, combined with our skid-mounted packaged option, resulted in a uniform and compact solution. This system effectively provided filtered water at 5 microns to the entire facility, addressing the client’s sediment issues and improving overall operations.

Our project demonstrated our ability to design and implement custom filtration solutions that meet the specific needs of our clients. By combining advanced filtration technology with a flexible and efficient design, we were able to deliver a solution that exceeded expectations and provided long-term benefits to the client’s operations.
