Background

Woolmers Estate, one of Tasmania’s five convict World Heritage sites, required a reliable water treatment system for its new visitors centre. We were approached by the project engineers to design, supply, install, and commission a comprehensive water treatment plant to produce potable water for the centre.

Objectives

The primary objective was to ensure a consistent supply of safe, high-quality potable water for visitors and staff at Woolmers Estate. This included designing a system capable of treating water sourced from the nearby Macquarie River and supplemented by rainwater collected from the centre’s roof.

Challenges

A significant challenge was managing the tight construction schedule. Efficient resource management was essential to meet deadlines and deliver the project on time. The treatment system had to be robust enough to handle various water sources and contaminants, ensuring continuous quality and safety.

Solution

The solution involved a multi-faceted water treatment plant design using the MediaPRO:

  • Sediment Removal Media – To filter out large particles and sediments.
  • Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Media – For removing organic contaminants and improving taste and odor.
  • UF Membrane Plant – To eliminate high molecular weight contaminants, colloids, and bacteria.
  • Recirculating Chlorine Dosing System – With online monitoring and analysis to maintain disinfection residuals.
  • Single VSD Pumpset – To pressurize and distribute treated water throughout the complex.

To expedite the construction process, the plant was skid-mounted in-house and delivered as a complete package, minimizing on-site assembly time.

Outcome

The water treatment plant was successfully installed and commissioned, including comprehensive system training for site personnel. This ensures continuous monitoring of operational parameters, guaranteeing safe, quality water is available 24/7. The project was completed on time, within budget, and exceeded expectations.
