PROJECT: Wagga Wagga Base Hospital
STATE:
NSW
PARTNERS: Hunter Pumps, NSW Health
SCOPE: Design, Supply

TECHNOLOGY: Screen Filtration
APPLICATION: Mains Inlet
WATER ISSUES: Sediment
PRODUCTS / SOLUTION: Judo

Background
Working closely with the hydraulic consultant, a state-of-the-art mains inlet filtration plant was developed for the new Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. The German-manufactured JUDO fully automatic self-cleaning screen filter units were selected for this project due to their unique features and superior performance.

Objectives
The primary objective was to design and supply a fully automatic sediment removal system with remote monitoring capability while ensuring minimal water consumption.

Challenges
The project faced several challenges, including the need to:

  • Achieve maximum screen cleaning efficiency through a unique point rotation screen cleaning process.
  • Ensure the product’s durability and ability to filter and clean without interrupting the service flow.

Solution
The solution was a two-stage sediment removal system configured with:

  • A 100-micron filter for the first stage.
  • A 30-micron filter for the second stage, ensuring maximum sediment reduction.

Each unit is fully integrated into the hospital’s Building Management System (BMS), allowing for remote monitoring of fault status and even remote initiation of the backwash process. The system was supplied as a complete package, including manifold pipework, valves, and controls on a support frame, which significantly reduced installation time. The modular design of duty/standby in the skid format allows flexibility for greater peak demand flows and ensures an uninterrupted supply of filtered water to the hospital during service and maintenance intervals. An additional bypass on the manifold allows for further filtration stages if the hospital’s demand increases.

Outcome
The implementation of the advanced filtration system at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital resulted in:

  • Maximum sediment reduction through a highly efficient two-stage process.
  • Seamless integration with the hospital’s BMS for remote monitoring and control.
  • Reduced installation time due to the complete package design.
  • Flexibility and reliability in water supply during peak demand and maintenance periods.

In Summary
The innovative filtration system at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital showcases advanced technology and thoughtful design, providing efficient sediment removal and ensuring a consistent, high-quality water supply. The project demonstrates the successful collaboration between hydraulic consultants and manufacturers, resulting in a robust and reliable solution for the hospital’s water filtration needs.
