Background
The International Convention Centre (ICC) in Darling Harbour, NSW, is built on the footprint of the former Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. This brand-new, $1.1 billion development was delivered by the NSW Government and opened in December 2016. ICC Sydney is renowned as Asia Pacific’s premier integrated convention, exhibition, and entertainment precinct, highlighting Sydney’s status as a top-tier meeting and event destination.

Objectives
The ICC Sydney water filtration requirement was to design and supply an advanced solution for domestic cold water and harvest rainwater. The goal was to ensure clean, safe, and reliable water for various uses within the facility, including drinking and toilet flushing.

Challenges
The main challenges faced in this project included:

  • Designing a filtration system capable of handling large volumes of water with varying qualities.
  • Ensuring the removal of suspendexd particles to specific micron levels for both domestic cold water and harvested rainwater.
  • Incorporating systems that could operate efficiently within the space and infrastructure constraints of the ICC Sydney.

Solution

  • Domestic Cold Water Filtration

We designed a domestic cold water filtration plant featuring three JUDO JPF ATP DN100 automatic backwash filters. This system effectively removes suspended particles in the water supply to a level of 100 microns (0.1mm) and can handle a probable simultaneous flow of 55.0 L/s.

  • Rainwater Harvesting Filtration

For the rainwater harvesting system used for toilet flushing, the solution comprised four JUDO JPF ATP DN100 automatic backwash filters and two SKAN UV disinfection systems. This setup removes suspended particles to a level of 30 microns (0.03mm) and inactivates any potential bacteria or viruses in the harvested rainwater supply, managing a probable simultaneous flow of 24.0 L/s.

Outcome
The implementation of these advanced filtration systems ensured that ICC Sydney’s water supply met high-quality standards, providing safe and clean water for both domestic use and toilet flushing. The innovative solutions contributed to the overall sustainability and operational efficiency of the ICC Sydney.

In Summary
By addressing the challenges of large-scale water filtration, we successfully delivered an ICC Sydney water filtration solution, ensuring that ICC Sydney maintains its reputation as a leading venue in the Asia Pacific region.
