Background
When the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) opened in April 2017, it marked a significant transformation in healthcare on the Sunshine Coast. The hospital is supported by highly trained specialist staff who provide safe and comprehensive care for patients with complex or life-threatening conditions. This advancement has significantly reduced the need for approximately 10,000 patients each year to travel to Brisbane for complex treatments.

Objectives
The main objectives of this project were to:

  • Provide high-quality healthcare services locally, reducing the need for patient travel.
  • Ensure a reliable and clean water supply for the hospital.
  • Design a scalable solution to accommodate future growth and expansion.

Challenges
The hospital faced several challenges, including:

  • Ensuring a reliable and high-quality water supply to support the hospital’s operations.
  • Designing a system capable of handling maximum instantaneous peak flow rates.
  • Creating a solution that allows for redundancy during preventative maintenance and is scalable for future expansion.

Solution
Southland Filtration collaborated with Aurecon and Lend Lease from the detailed design conception through to project completion. The solution involved:

  • Duplex custom skid-mounted packages – These systems filter incoming mains water to below 30 microns, ensuring clean water supply for the entire site.
  • Modular design – This allows for easy future expansion if needed, supporting the hospital’s potential growth to more than 738 beds and up to 900 beds beyond 2021.
  • Redundancy features – The design accommodates peak flow rates and provides redundancy during maintenance programs to ensure uninterrupted water supply.

Outcome

The Sunshine Coast Hospital water filtration system achieved:

  • A reliable and clean water supply for SCUH, essential for patient care and hospital operations.
  • The ability to support high patient volumes and complex medical treatments without interruption.

A scalable solution that can accommodate future growth and expansion of the hospital

In Summary

The Sunshine Coast University Hospital, since its opening in April 2017, has revolutionized healthcare on the Sunshine Coast. With the support of Southland Filtration, Aurecon, and Lend Lease, the hospital implemented a state-of-the-art water filtration system that ensures a reliable and clean water supply. Thew Sunshine Coast Hospital water filtration system not only supports the hospital’s current needs but is also designed for future expansion, ensuring ongoing high-quality care for patients.
