Background
Southland Filtration was engaged by a leading hydraulic engineering firm during the concept phase of a project to design and recommend solutions for a domestic cold water filtration system (DCWF) and Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) water treatment works.
Objectives
- Develop a two-stage filtration system for DCWF.
- Design a comprehensive water treatment solution to meet AS4187:2014 compliance for CSSD.
Challenges
- Ensuring precise and efficient filtration for domestic cold water.
- Designing a water treatment system to meet stringent CSSD requirements.
- Implementing a solution that maximizes operational efficiency and minimizes downtime.
Solution
The Domestic Cold Water Filtration system scope included a two-stage filtration system with 100-micron and 30-micron filters in a duty/standby configuration. The JUDO JPF series of automatic backwash filters were selected due to their precise and unique filtration and cleaning technology, with over 20 years of proven success in major hospitals nationally.
The CSSD scope required a complete solution to deliver AS4187:2014 (now ASNZ 5369:2023) compliant water. The design included a pre-treatment package consisting of:
- A break-tank
- Dual VSD pumps
- Automatic water softener
An EndoTherm packaged reverse osmosis (RO) plant was also included, featuring:
- Duty/standby operation
- Automatic hot water sanitization
- Raw and permeate water buffer tanks
- Comprehensive control functionality
- A compact, mobile plug-and-play skid
Outcome
Following successful commissioning, a comprehensive training program was conducted to educate relevant stakeholders on the operation and functionality of the plant. Additionally, a preventative maintenance program was implemented to ensure water quality and quantity requirements are met, optimizing operating costs and maximizing equipment life. Routine maintenance will ensure environmental efficiency, maximize equipment life, and minimize/prevent CSSD downtime.
