PROJECT: Scottsdale Irrigation Scheme
STATE:
Tas
PARTNERS: Netco, Tasmanian Irrigation
SCOPE: Design, Supply, Commissioning

TECHNOLOGY: Bag & Cartridge Filtration
APPLICATION: Mains inlet
WATER ISSUES: Sediment
PRODUCTS / SOLUTION: Skan Bag & Cartridge Filters

Background
In partnership with Netco Pumps and Equipment, we successfully completed the design, supply, and commissioning of a large automatic self-cleaning screen filtration system for the Scottsdale Irrigation Scheme.

Objectives
The primary objective of this project was to implement a robust filtration system ensures that noxious gorse seeds do not spread across catchments during summer distribution.

Challenges
One of the major challenges faced in this project was designing a filtration system that could effectively filter large quantities of water while preventing gorse seed spread in Scottsdale. Additionally, the system needed to be seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure of the irrigation scheme, which includes a new 9,300ML Camden dam and an 84km pipeline network.

Solution
The solution involved the installation of the SKAN FMA12414 automatic self-cleaning screen filtration system. This system was specifically selected for its impressive capabilities, which include:

  • Connections: 800mm flanged inlet/outlet
  • Design flow rate: 840L/sec @ 1000kPa
  • Screen aperture: 2mm
  • Screen surface area: >42,600 cm²
  • Height: 3800mm
  • Weight: 3800kg

Outcome
The implementation of the SKAN FMA12414 filtration system has been highly successful. It ensures the effective filtration of water within the Scottsdale Irrigation Scheme, preventing gorse seek spread. This not only protects the local ecosystem but also supports the efficient distribution of water throughout the region, including releases to boost flows in the Great Forester River, Hurst Creek, and Brid River.

In Summary
The collaboration between Southland Filtration and Netco Pumps and Equipment has resulted in a highly efficient and reliable filtration system for the Scottsdale Irrigation Scheme. The SKAN FMA12414 automatic self-cleaning screen filtration system meets the project’s objectives and overcomes significant challenges, ensuring the protection and efficient operation of the irrigation scheme.
